Upper and lower GI surgery

In the medical field, the gastrointestinal system is broken into two sections: upper GI and lower GI. The upper GI includes the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and other organs in the upper part of the body, while the lower GI includes the bowels and lower abdomen. At Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital, we offer surgical services for both of these areas, making use of minimally invasive techniques that reduce the risk of infection and allow our patients to heal faster.

The following are some common upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures:

  • Hernia removal

  • Colectomy

  • Gallstone treatment

  • Barrett’s Esophagus ablation

  • Organ transplants

  • Bariatric (weight loss) surgery

  • GERD surgery

Many GI surgeries are performed with endoscopes and/or laparoscopes. These are small, flexible, tube-like cameras that allow surgeons to perform complex procedures without cutting a patient completely open.
